CREATIVE DIRECTION: JUNODREAM “POOLS OF COLOUR”

Since 2023, I’ve worked alongside the British band Junodream as a creative director, developing a cohesive video direction for their debut album, ‘Pools of Colour’. As well as directing and commissioning video content.

Junodream are known for a distinctive visual presentation, rooted in modernism, analogue texture, in-camera abstraction and new millennium graphic design. And they approached me to discuss what that looked like for video, at a budget-level appropriate for an emerging indie band.

We began by diving into the themes of the album (space, alienation, wonder). Then we collaborated on a bank of references, drawing on video art, art house cinema, and science fiction novels. We drew up a set of thematic and aesthetic guidelines for music videos. And I worked alongside the band to commission and oversee them. The resulting music videos were directed by Callum Pearson, David East and I respectively.

To close out the album cycle, I directed a looping suite of 10 visualisers, conceived to showcase each song on the album across a variety of formats and social media platforms. As well as re-contextualising previous videos in a cohesive narrative. Drawing on personal experience of loss and sickness, they are inspired by Derek Jarman’s final film ‘Blue’.
